Test Drive: New Maruti Suzuki Swift

Maruti Suzuki Swift is one among the most discussed cars in India. The Indians' love for Swift is not only on the talk. If you search the sales graph you will come to conclude that they love to make it their own as well. No one has any worries in waiting long for Swift these days, when you can get a new car on the courtyard with a phone call. It is extremely surprising to note that the new Swift got more than 40,000 pre-release bookings. None of the cars introduced recently has got such an encouraging welcome.

Styling

In terms of newness there isn't much that is borrowed from the previous model of Swift.  Eventhough engine and technical features appear to come from the old model, Maruti Suzuki has made timely changes to them. The appearance is also almost the same as the old model, and Maruti claims that the old appearance has been preserved purposely. No doubt, Swift is Maruti Suzuki's car that has the most eye catching design and styling.

You agree with it or not, Swift has got a prominent position in the wishlist of Indian youth. Swift cars styled into convertible ones by using black film on the top can be found on almost all Indian cities. Front grill with a large Suzuki logo, flowing side panels and a special Swift rear add to the charm of this car. Turn indicators are incorporated into the rear-view mirrors. New styled wheels have Suzuki logo on them. The length and width has been increased by 90mm and 5 mm, respectively. But the weight has been brought down by 30kg for petrol model and 15kg for diesel model.

Interior

Swift has a fit and finish that reminds us of luxury cars. The interior with premium black and brushed aluminium finish bears some similarity with Kizashi. The seats are made of high quality fabrics. Modest dashboard and door trims. Chromium ringed sporty instrumental console. Enough leg room and dikky space. The rear leg room has been increased. Cabin with very less noise and vibration. Comfortable L-section rear head rest. All in all the comfort of a premium car. Profiled tyres, and torsion beam suspension system give a smooth journey even on bad roads.

Tech
Swift is available in both petrol and diesel. Diesel model is the popular one. The 1284cc 4-cylinder engine gives a max torque of 193.7Nm and a peak power of 75bhp. You will feel the power when you place the foot on the accelerator. Another notable feature is the smooth power at fifth gear. Even if consistent 2nd and 3rd gear shifts may required, no much down shift will be required on reaching the 5th gear. Over taking can be done at the top gear even with a little low speed. This turn out to be handy on both highways and city roads. Just 14.87 seconds to reach 100kmph from absolute zero. Air Conditioning that won't affect driving performance. And fuel-efficiency? The VVT (Variable Valve Timing) petrol model gives a mileage of 22.9kmpl. The VVT technology make the 1.2L small engine a high performer. The power steering gives good control of the car. New ABS and airbags are the features of the Z-series. The Diesel model gives more confidence than Petrol model. High performance engine braking even at overdrive. The price of new Maruti Suzuki Swift ranges from Rs. 4.52 lakhs - 6.68 lakhs (Ex-showroom New Delhi).
