IPL Playoffs: Eliminator 1: Dhoni Knocks Mumbai Out

Chennai Super Kings players' habit of rising to the occasion paid them a chance to enter the final of the fifth edition of IPL. In the second playoff match against the Mumbai Indians, CSK won by a huge margin of 38 runs supported by the splendid bowling performance of the bowlers. The CSK will now have to face the Delhi Daredevils on Friday in the last eliminator at Chennai.

MS Dhoni (51 off 20) played a captains knock when the team needed it the most

A wonderful captain's knock by MS Dhoni (51 of 20 balls) supported by Dwayne Bravo (33 off 14 balls) did it in for Chennai. After losing two early wicket Chennai put up a valiant fightback with Mike Hussey and S.Badrinath scoring quick 49 and 47, respectively. And then, Dhoni had different plans at Bangalore. Dhoni, the swashbuckler, exposed his power in front of a packed up Bangalore crowd and amassed 51 runs of just 20 deliveries with the help of 6 boundaries and two huge hits over the rope. He along with Dwayne Bravo built up a partnership of 73 off just 29 balls and put up a massive total on the board. CSK piled up 105 runs in the last eight overs alone. Dhawal Kulkarni, who picked up three wickets including the first two, went for 46 runs in his 4 overs. MI bowling spearhead Lasit Malinga saw his most expensive spell of the season and gave away 41 runs in 4 overs.

In reply to the huge total, Mumbai Indians delivered nothing special except an opening partnership of 47 runs from 30 balls. Eventhough the early strikes from Dwayne Smith gave a ray of hope for MI, the batsmen to follow did not live up to the expectation. The fragile top order of MI collapsed in front of the powerful bowling attack of the Super Kings. And a wonderful all round performance from the West Indian Dwayne Bravo (2 for 10 in 3 overs) meant that MI had to wait for another season to see the IPL final again. Albie Morkel picked up two wickets including that of in form batsman Rohit Sharma.
