Murali Vijay was back in his flair and stole the show on Friday |
The Chennai opener Murali Vijay, who had been on a poor run so far in the ongoing IPL season, raced back to his form and smashed his second IPL century becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat. Vijay scored a lightening fast 58 ball 113 and fired the team total to a record 222 for 5. The Daredevils, whose performance was outstanding in the league phase went completely lackluster on the playoff matches. But Chennai who entered the playoffs with a little margin of luck used the opportunity to the very best and ensured a third chance to take home the IPL championship. It was a completely dominant performance by Super Kings and the true colour of the champions was on display at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium. It was Murali Vijay who set it up for the 'Chennai Veerans'. Vijay hit 15 fours and four sixes to get to the highest individual score of this season and deservingly became the Man of the Match. Vijay batted with flair and looked at ease for most of the time. He smashed 21 runs of Sehwag's over including two sixes and two fours. He scored his century of 51 deliveries, the fastest of this season. Mike Hussey played a supporting role and with Vijay he shared a partnership of 68 runs in just 8.1 overs. Raina, Dhoni and Bravo played quickfire knocks of 27(17), 23(10) and 33(12) respectively to add to the team total.
Daredevils almost lost the match after the toss. In the absence of injured Irfan Pathan, the decision to play less known offspinner Sunny Gupta instead of the pace spearhead Morne Morkel backfired very much and Chennai batsmen really used the weakened bowling department to the best. Sunny Gupta went for 47 runs in just 3 overs and pacer Varun Aaron (2 for 63 in 4 0vers) was taken for the most expensive spell in the IPL history. Umesh Yadav bowled comparatively well especially at the death.
In reply to the mammoth total, Delhi surprised everyone with Mahela Jayawardene opening the innings with David Warner, instead of Virender Sehwag. But the decision was another great blunder. They lost both Warner and Sehwag before the fourth over and the fate of the match was almost written. Only Jayawardene (55 off 38) showed some resistance to the lethal Chennai bowling attack. Ross Taylor also tried to make a fight but it was by then too much out of his reach that he succumbed to the immense pressure scoring 24 off 14 balls. The Delhi folded up in just 16.5 overs. R.Ashwin picked up three wickets and Shadab Jakati two. Hilfenhaus, A.Morkel and Bravo picked up one wicket each. The fielding of Chennai was exemplary while it was the otherways for Delhi.
It was very much disappointing to see a very dominant and clinical campaign ending in a huge defeat.
